Engaging in Conversations that Matters

Cultivating skills and practices to effectively engage with others to care for what matters

This course begins from a simple premise: To take care of what matters, we must strengthen our ability to engage in conversations.

Taking care of what matters in our lives – in our work, our relationships, our teams, and our communities – almost always involves other people and it often begins in conversations. And yet, this is precisely where many of us struggle.

We don’t always see the need to have a conversation. Many of us to default to trying to handle things on our own. And if people see that they need to have a conversation, these are often experienced as “difficult.” By the time someone says, “I need to have a difficult conversation,” even though the conversation hasn’t even begun, the situation is already occurring in a way that can limit what feels possible. We feel stuck and find ourselves in moods like frustration, resignation or distrust. We hesitate to initiate the conversation, delay it, or simply avoid it altogether. Or, we engage only partially, in ways that are rushed, defensive, skimming the surface, never quite touching the concerns that require care. When this happens, concerns remain unaddressed and possibilities for taking care of what matters close down.

Engaging in Conversations that Matters offers a learning experience that goes beyond typical “difficult conversations” workshops. It supports you in developing new ways of engaging directly with others about what matters — to you and to them — and in discovering possibilities for taking care of those concerns together. Our goal is not to give you a set of techniques, but to support you in cultivating skills and practices that help you turn more readily to conversation as a space for taking care by listening, learning, building trust and coordinating action when needed.

  • "In my professional role, we constantly face conversations that can be uncomfortable and often avoided. The program helped me recognize how my moods and judgments influence those conversations. I stopped assuming my perspective was the truth and now seek to understand how others are seeing the same situation."

    Antonio, Tech Lead

  • "I discovered that the most difficult conversation was not with others, but with myself. Becoming aware of my judgments helped me understand what was interfering with what truly matters to me when managing with others. Conversation became a deep, ongoing practice to work through breakdowns and sustain resolutions over time."

    Erica, Coach

  • "I began to notice my judgments and those of others more clearly, and to distinguish between judgments and facts. I adopted practices such as observing my mood before acting and delegating more. This allowed me to build with my teams and participate in conversations I would have previously avoided."

    Luz, University Student Leader

  • "I take with me new ways of listening, asking questions, and holding difficult conversations without rushing them. I became more aware of my moods and how judgments open or close possibilities. I also realized how many judgments we carry that, without noticing, shape our decisions."

    Trinidad, PhD Candidate

  • "In a fast-moving world, this program invited me to slow down and improve my listening, both internal and external, which is key for better coordination at work and in life. It requires practice and time, but the results show in the quality of our conversations and how we work with others."

    Gustavo, CEO

What will I learn?

Engaging in Conversations that Matters is a short course designed to support people in more readily — and more effectively — engaging in conversations in service of what matters to you and to others. You will not “master” this work in a short course — and that is not the point.

What you can expect is to leave with:

  • a greater readiness to engage in conversations you might previously have avoided

  • a stronger ability to listen for what matters to you and to others.

  • and a growing ability to turn conversations into opportunities for learning, trust, and
    coordination when necessary.

These capacities deepen with practice. To support that, you’ll retain access AI supported Gyms for three months after the program ends. We offer a subscription for those who wish to continue with this practice beyond this time period.
